ਨੀਲਗਿਰੀ ਪਹਾੜਾਂ ਤੇ ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੰਮਪਲ ਸੀਤਾ ਰਤਨਾਮਲ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਚੀਨ ਆਦਿਵਾਸੀ ਕਬੀਲੇ 'ਇਰੂਲਾ' ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਬੀਲੇ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਕੁੜੀ ਸੀ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਪੁਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਪਰੰਪਰਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਕਿਨਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਬੋਰਡਿੰਗ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿਚ ਜਾਣ ਦਾ ਹੌਂਸਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ। ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਨੌਂ ਵਰ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਇਕ ਦੁਰਘਟਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਲੱਤ ਦੀ ਹੱਡੀ ਫ਼ਰੈਕਚਰ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਕੁਨੂਰ ਦੇ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਵਿਖੇ ਡਾਕਟਰ ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਰਾਜਨ ਦੀ ਦੇਖ-ਰੇਖ ‘ਚ ਜ਼ੇਰੇ-ਇਲਾਜ ਰਹੀ। ਡਾ. ਰਾਜਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਖ਼ਸੀ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆਂ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹ ਉਸ ‘ਤੇ ਸੰਮੋਹਿਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ। ਸੀਤਾ, ਡਾਕਟਰ ਰਾਜਨ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਰੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਬਿਤਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਵੇਖਣ ਲੱਗੀ। ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸੁਪਨਾ, ਸੁਪਨਾ ਹੀ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਰਹਿ ਗਿਆ। ਉਹ ਅਧੂਰੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਟੀਸ ਦਿਲ ਵਿਚ ਸਮੋ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਸ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ ਪਰਤ ਆਈ, ਪਹਾੜਾਂ ਤੇ ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਨਾਹ ਵਿਚ। ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਕੀ ਵਾਪਰਿਆ, ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ। ਇਸ ਧਰਤੀ 'ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਹੋਂਦ ਦਾ ਇੱਕੋ-ਇਕ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਬਾਕੀ ਹੈ–ਉਸ ਦੀ ਅਦੁੱਤੀ ਜੀਵਨੀ—"ਬਿਯੌਂਡ ਦ ਜੰਗਲ" (ਜੰਗਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ) ਜੋ ਆਦਿਵਾਸੀ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਸਵੈ-ਜੀਵਨੀ ਹੈ।
